Jeff T. Gorman Criminal Defense Attorney, Stuart, Florida
Lawyer, serving Stuart, Florida, Martin County, and St. Lucie County by providing aggressive and experienced criminal defense legal representation. Jeff Gorman is a respected and active member of the Florida Bar and is admitted to practice before the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida. After moving to the Treasure Coast five years ago Mr. Gorman worked for the State Attorney for the 19th Judicial Circuit where, during his tenure, he performed more felony trials to a jury verdict than any other prosecutor. Jeff Gorman left the Office of State Attorney to run for State Legislature in 2008 and is still an active member in Treasure Coast political organizations. Since 2008, he has been an advocate on behalf of business, criminal defense and personal injury clients.
Mr. Gorman, the first in his family to attend college, studied electrical engineering at the University of Maryland at College Park. While studying engineering Jeff Gorman was pulled toward another stronger passion. Jeff Gorman pursued a legal career. In 1996 he graduated Penn State's Dual Degree Program with a Bachelor of Science in Economics and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. After graduation Mr. Gorman started his legal career at the law firm of Dickstein, Shapiro, Morin & Oshinsky, in Washington, DC.
From 1996 until 1998, Jeff Gorman was placed in charge of prosecuting hundreds of cases all over the United States under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act or 'ERISA.' During that time Jeff Gorman honed early skills in Federal litigation and negotiating debts owed to major labor unions. From 1998 until 2001 Jeff Gorman attended the Catholic University Columbus School of Law. While at Catholic University he interned with the Law Firm of Heenan, Althen & Roles and for the U.S. Department of Justice Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs Section. Mr. Gorman also obtained a summer clerk position with the Honorable Royce C. Lamberth, Judge U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. After graduating law school Jeff Gorman took a position at the Office of State Attorney for the 11th Judicial Circuit in Miami. There he prosecuted hundreds of misdemeanor cases and took many to trial before several Dade County Court Judges.
In 2002 Jeff Gorman accepted a position as a Felony Trial Attorney with Robert "Bob" Jacobs, the Public Defender for the 20th Judicial Circuit in Fort Myers, Florida. After only a few months from graduating law school, Jeff Gorman took to trial State of Florida vs. Ben Levy. Ben Levy was facing 1st Degree Attempted Murder Charges with a Firearm. The evidence of the workplace shooting was substantial and included a taped confession. The case had been greatly publicized and most commentators considered the case a slam dunk for the experienced prosecutors assigned. After a withering cross examination, the alleged "victim" in the case admitted to having several altercations with Mr. Levy and his credibility was called into question. After Mr. Levy testified the jury was given the entire story and a much different chain of events came to light tearing apart the prosecutors' case. After deliberating for a short time, the Lee County jury acquitted Ben Levy of all charges and he walked out of the courtroom a free man.
Over the next three years Jeff Gorman built a reputation for aggressively pursuing his clients' best interests and taking cases to trial. During his tenure as a Defense Attorney with the Public Defender's Office he achieved a highly successful record of jury verdicts in his clients' favor. In 2005, Jeff Gorman worked as a Felony Prosecutor in Key West, Florida. During his tenure he took more felony cases to trial than any other prosecutor and accounted for the lion's share of total felony cases decided by a jury in the entire 16th Judicial Circuit of Monroe County. In early 2006, Jeff Gorman accepted a position with the State Attorney for the 19th Judicial Circuit where he quickly established a reputation as a successful trial lawyer. After a run for State Legislature in August of 2008, Mr. Gorman has worked hard for clients throughout the Treasure Coast. Jeff Gorman has never been afraid to take on a tough case. His character and love of trial work is reflected in his career as both a successful prosecutor and defense attorney.
